Insomniacs

Most of the work that I do is quite structured, with the desired end result often being worked out well in advance. As an alternative to this, I wanted to create a set of images that were as far away from that concept as possible, bringing the elements of randomness and chance to the fore.

My starting point with these was often by using photomontages or artworks I'd made, but then photographically adding to them to create something denser and more obscure.

Some of these were shot entirely "in camera", where the film emulsion is carefully lined up and exposed two or three times, juxtaposing different scenes together to construct something much more abstract. Others were created by sandwiching film transparencies together or manipulating polaroid images as they developed.
